Candalan Cavaliers

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dog Breeder - Canberra ACT

Candalan is a small show and breeding kennel located in the South of Canberra, specialising in black & tan and ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Our dogs are much loved family members, who live and play in and around our home. Our breeding program is carefully planned, and we invest a lot of time and energy into our dogs and puppies to ensure healthy, happy and well-adjusted dogs.

At Candalan we aim for type, soundness, temperament and personality. We have a small show team and our dogs also enjoy obedience training, as well as a number of dog sports at trial levels, such as Rally-Obedience, Endurance and Agility. I completed an Agility Instructor's course in 2020 and I am currently working as an assistant agility instructor at the ACT Companion Dog Club.

Occasionally, we have puppies available from our health checked and DNA tested dogs to approved homes.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.we heart screen our dogs yearly by a cardiologist for mitral valve disease and other heart conditions such a pulmonic valve stenosis. We have also started to eye screen our dogs by an ophthalmologist and will be commencing a breeding program for Syringomyelia via MRI, maintaining generational screening of our dogs into older age. We also routinely DNA test for a number of conditions which might affect Cavalier KCSs: Episodic falling syndrome (EFS), Curly coat/dry eye (ccde), Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM), Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD), Congenital macrothrombocytopenia (CKCS type)(CM), Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD).

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.Preparing puppies for their new homes involves early socialisation to ensure they are confident and well-adjusted. Puppies are exposed to various stimuli, including different people (men, women, children), environments (indoors, outdoors, car rides), and sounds (household noises, traffic). They interact with other vaccinated dogs and pets to build social skills. This helps them adapt to new experiences and reduces fear. We provide mental and physical stimulation through puzzle toys, safe chew items, and supervised play. Puppies explore different textures, surfaces, and obstacles to build confidence and curiosity. Positive reinforcement is used to encourage good behavior. Basic commands like "sit," "come," and "leave it" are introduced using reward-based methods. Puppies are also crate-trained and begin house-training to ease the transition to their new homes. Puppies receive age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, and vet check-ups. We educate new owners on proper nutrition, grooming, and ongoing care. We provide a "puppy pack" with familiar items (blanket, toy) and a care guide. Follow-up support is offered to address any questions or concerns.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.Enquirers will be asked a number of questions about their home environment including domicile type, family size, other pets in the home, physical activities and more to ensure that not only the breed in general (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) is the right fit for them, but also the individual puppy.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.All puppies not kept for showing are sold on Limited Registration with a desexing contract.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. No.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.Buyer's are free to contact me at any time after receiving a puppy, to ask questions discuss nutrition, grooming, and general care, and we can assist with veterinary questions. We provide guidance on housebreaking, obedience, and socialization, and can recommend trainers or resources if needed. In the (hopefully rare) event that the new owner can no longer care for the puppy, we take the dog back to ensure it finds a safe, loving home. We always welcome news or pictures about our puppies in their new home.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.In the (hopefully rare) event that the new owner can no longer care for the puppy, we take the dog back to ensure it finds a safe, loving home.
