The Bernese Mountain Dog is a very large dog with a distinctive tri-colored coat, black with white chest and rust colored markings. The breed was traditionally used as an all purpose farm dog for guarding property and to drive dairy cattle long distances from the farm to the alpine pastures.
Bernese are outdoor dogs at heart, though well-behaved in the house. They need activity and exercise but don't have a great deal of endurance. If they are sound they enjoy hiking and generally stick close to their people.
Bernese mountain dogs are affectionate and generally do very well with children. They are patient dogs that also work well with other pets and around strangers.
The Bernese have a higher rate of fatal cancer than other breeds and also an unusually high mortality due to musculoskeletal issues. Prospective owners should be prepared to cope with a large dog that may have mobility problems at a young age. The Bernese have an average life expectancy of 7 to 8 years.
The Berner-Garde Database provides genetic information on the Bernese Mountain Dog, and bmdinfo.org is a great resource for anyone with an interest in the breed.
